DAMN
In 2017 Kendrick Lamar released his seventh debut album DAMN. Due to the concept of the album, it follows a certain story about : mental breakdown which is came from after fame and commercial success. Album begins with a question that asks “Weakness or Wickedness?”. And all songs answer this question in order right after interlude ends.
Wickedness
DNA, ELEMENT, HUMBLE, LUST, XXX,DUCKWORTH songs about Kendrick’s wickednesses. I am not gonna dive into the every song one by one. But to summarize , Kendrick talks about how he is on top of the rap world, how rich he is ,etc. Christianity’s Seven Deadly Sins symbolization ,follows each and every song. He fuck bitches, murders, hits on the ground his enemies, uses drugs. All of the actions he did about, hedonistic pleasures, the desire of power and being on top of the world.
But if you take a close look in every Wickedness tracks, nothing really doesn’t gives him long last happiness unlike instant pleasures. Imagine even if you are one of the most successful and richest rappers alive, at one hit point , hedonism , pleasures doesn’t make him happy anymore.
Weakness
YAH, FEEL, LOYALTY, PRIDE, LOVE, FEAR, GOD tracks about, exact things what Kendrick really wants. He reaches more holly, calm, emotional and religious state unlike pleasures. He wants to feel loyalty and love.He wants forgiveness from his sins. He’s always suffers that the idea of Nobody prays for him. The whole album related to the religion, god, sin and Christianity somehow. He is looking for loyalty. He is looking for love because he’s feel himself Israelite. Cursed from God.
He regrets his PRIDE because he wants to be loved. He thinks that love gonna get him killed, but pride also gonna be the death of him. I believed that, even the terms of “kill and death” are the same things, Kendrick separates them in two ways. He might think that love is painful and heartbreaking, but at least love is a strong feeling and bound which is remembered that you are a human, unlike pleasure. However ,Pride symbolizes death of humanity because you are losing your feelings because of your pride. And after that, you feel like your soul gone forever. Maybe you lost yor love that you will never find again. Because day by day, we lose our innocence.
DESIRE OF CONTROL
Especially after rise of postmodernism and internet’s consuming culture, materialistic perspective effected each one of us. Sex, drugs, alcohol, food, etc. Like fucking “super rich kids” . The idea of reaching the top of the pyramid. Suddenly you find yourself that even food isn’t that much delicious anymore. Just nothing, empty.
As I observed, society started to make tactical , abusive , manipulative movements in their relationships. If you want to reach someone , you have to move tactical without any emotional experiences. You mustn’t chase your love because it’s gonna make you less desirable. You must act like you don’t give a fuck about peron that you love and threat them like a shit. If you do that they will become obsessed with you because exactly the most important thing not love or something it’s all about obsession and competition. Like a fucking game. But the most missed part is problematic and unsecured people returns bad treatments like that. I don’t wanna be with them. They are always the game who tires you without passionate and soft love. Waste of time because they don’t even love you, they are just eating your soul for feel themselves strong.
They don’t even try. They are always in the comfort zone. I hope that you find any courage to try. Even with someone else.
However the worst part is sometimes people you knew turns into a disappointment. They started to act like asshole unlike they used to. They just became heartless and totally different person that they used to. And you just feel sorry because you know that one day sex , drugs, nothing will not give them pleasure anymore.Everyone will feel “Israelite”
